West Ham are now winless in their last three games after suffering a 2-0 defeat against Arsenal in the London derby.

Goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Emile Smith-Rowe sealed all three points for the Gunners in the Premier League clash on Wednesday night at the Emirates Stadium.

There were some contentious decisions in the game, and Andy Townsend wasn’t particularly impressed with Craig Dawson’s challenge on Alexandre Lacazette.

In the first half, Dawson made a tackle on Lacazette inside the box. After a VAR check, Anthony Taylor rejected the penalty appeal from the Gunners.

Townsend said (15 December) to Premier League tv Production during the game: “How much contact does Craig Dawson make with the ball here? Doesn’t make any at all.

“He clatters into Lacazette. The ball has gone away from the Arsenal man. I’ll tell you what, that’s a clumsy challenge. That’s close.”

No penalty

Yes, it was a clumsy challenge but there was no malice behind it.

Dawson got a touch on the ball and got tangled with Lacazette in the box. It was the right decision, in the end, to not award a penalty.

The 31-year-old defender was outstanding during the game against the Gunners. It was a commanding performance at the back from him.

He blocked four shots, made three clearances, and was involved in a few strong tackles as well.

In the absence of Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna, the onus of responsibility has fallen on the shoulders of Dawson, one of the most experienced players in the side.

Arsenal grew in confidence as the game went on. West Ham did well to keep the score-line 0-0 at the break, but two second-half goals took the game away from them.

It wasn’t a good performance from the Hammers who lacked a
bit of energy and creativity.

With this victory, Arsenal have jumped to the top four in the league ahead of the Hammers.
