We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie has urged West Ham to back out of their reported talks to sign French left-back Lucas Digne from Everton.
On Wednesday night [5 January], the Daily Mail reported that the Hammers are in discussions over a deal to sign the 28-year-old, who’s valued at £30million by Everton despite wanting to leave.
It is understood that Digne’s £100,00-a-week wages have so far been a stumbling block for the Hammers in their talks.
Digne has fallen out with Everton manager Rafa Benitez, who confirmed via the Daily Mail today [7 January] that the ex-Barcelona left-back wants to quit Goodison Park this month.
Despite his availability and the fact he’s a quality left-back in the Premier League, McAvennie has warned West Ham about spending too much on him when they already have Aaron Cresswell.
While Cresswell is injured, McAvennie would rather wait until he’s back than sign someone for a large sum.
Speaking to West Ham Zone, the ex-Irons striker said: “I think they’re happy now with the way Cresswell’s developed this season and last. He’s just out injured.
“I think it’ll cost a bit of money getting Digne from Everton and I don’t think they’ll spend big money on a left-back.
“Sometimes when you spend big money on a player, you have to play them and you tend to give them more chances than you would another player because of that value you’ve spent on him.
“I wouldn’t think West Ham would spend that kind of money on a left-back, there are other areas that need investment.
“I’m quite happy with Cresswell too for him to stay there and do that. I don’t see [a move for Digne] happening.”
Digne has scored four goals and supplied 18 assists in 127 Premier League appearances since joining Everton in August 2018.
In other West Ham news, an “extraordinary” offer could see the Irons bag this centre-back in January.
