We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie predicts Craig Dawson to get the nod ahead of Issa Diop to replace Angelo Ogbonna in the West Ham defence.

Ogbonna, 33, sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury in the 3-2 win over Liverpool last weekend, and he is set for a significant spell on the sidelines [official club website].

Dawson, two years the Italian’s junior, was the centre-back David Moyes turned to against the Reds at the London Stadium, and ex-Irons attacker McAvennie believes the Englishman will be entrusted with replacing Ogbonna’s influence until he returns.

“I pray every week we don’t get any injuries,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone. “They’ve got a good squad, but it’s going to test them with Ogbonna being out. He’s a big miss, he’s a big lad.

“But listen, Dawson will come in and play with Kurt Zouma. He did well against Liverpool and that’s not an easy task. We were raving about him last year. He will come in and fill the gap.

“I’ve got no fears with that injury, I hope it’s a speedy recovery for the big man, but I don’t think it’s as bad as what people thought it was going to be. But I’m hoping he makes a full recovery because the squad needs everyone to get back for the run-in.”

In other West Ham news, the Irons could sign this ‘Sensational’ Champions League attacker for a bargain fee in January amid David Moyes relationship.
