We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie is delighted to hear Michail Antonio is fighting fit at the moment, but the ex-West Ham star has shared his future fears.

Antonio, 31, has been in fine form for the Irons this season, scoring seven goals in 12 games across two competitions, and only Liverpool phenomenon Mohamed Salah [10] and Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy [seven] have scored more Premier League goals than him so far [six] during the 2021/22 campaign.

The Jamaica international failed to score against Liverpool on Sunday, but the Reds were still beaten 3-2 at the London Stadium as the Irons leapfrogged them in the table.

McAvennie has expressed his admiration for David Moyes’ side, but suggests they may run into trouble if Antonio’s fitness takes a turn for the worse.

Absolutely brilliant, I’m so proud of them,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone. “They’ve got boys coming in and just doing great jobs.

“The biggest problem for me is they have to keep Antonio fit.

“Long may it continue, he’s saying he feels a lot better and his hamstring is not bothering him the same as what it used to, so here’s hoping, touch wood, because they’re doing very, very well. I’m so happy for David.”

Antonio told Sky Sports last month that a change in diet and extra gym work had aided his ability to stay fit and avoid injuries this term.

He said [via The Athletic]: “I used to eat what I wanted, I wasn’t the best eater. Now I’ve changed my diet and routine of life. And I’ve noticed since I changed my diet I’ve had less niggles and I’ve not felt my hamstrings at all.”

In other West Ham news, Jurgen Klopp has poured praise on this Irons star amid heavy transfer links to Liverpool.
