We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie would be delighted if West Ham sign Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick in the January transfer window.
The Mirror reported on 28 December that the Irons are “exploring a big-money January move” to sign the 25-year-old centre-forward.
It is understood that the Hammers are stepping up their efforts to strengthen their squad this month after Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky purchased a 27 per cent share in the London club.
And Schick, who was in stunning form for club and country in 2021, has emerged as an option for David Moyes.
McAvennie is a fan of the growing Czech contingent at the London Stadium and would like to see Schick join Michail Antonio in Moyes’ strikeforce.
Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “Listen, he scored a few goals at the Euros, it wasn’t just against Scotland.
“And you’ve got to look at players in the Czech Republic because some of the players, their attitude is brilliant.
“I would think, ‘yeah, he would come in’. Antonio’s got his place nailed down but if this boy comes in, he’ll be battling for his spot.
“It could be a blessing in disguise as Antonio could do with being rested for his own good rather than anything else because he’s one of those players who wants to play all the time.
“And I don’t think Moyes would be too against playing with two strikers sometimes, he’d be quite happy with that.
“He could maybe play a 3-5-2 or something. It’s good to have options.”
Schick has scored 16 goals in 14 Bundesliga matches so far this season with Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund both conceding to the Czech goal machine.
The Mirror reports that the Hammers are considering a £40million swoop to sign Schick, which would make him the club’s second-most-expensive signing after £45million flop Sebastien Haller.
In other West Ham news, ExWHUemployee has issued a major injury update with a ‘brilliant’ player set to be out for up to three months.
