West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal is likely to miss the weekend clash against Liverpool, according to Football London journalist Thomas Clark.
The Czech international sustained an injury before the international break and is yet to start a game for the Hammers since his return to fitness.
He played the last eight minutes of their Carabao Cup win over Manchester City, and per Clark, is still not ready to start a game.
Via his personal Twitter account, Clark wrote, “Expect Coufal to get some minutes midweek then massive call v Liverpool. Going forward will be rotating.
“Against Liverpool still going Johnson as he is on form / Coufal not fully fit.”
Johnson’s doing well
Who would’ve thought that Ben Johnson would come in place of Coufal and put in such an impressive shift?
Coufal was one of the Premier League’s best full-backs and seemed almost irreplaceable.
That’s why there were growing concerns in his absence as Ryan Fredericks and Johnson were not deemed to be good enough deputies for the Czech defender.
However, the way Johnson has taken to the role, the absence of Coufal has not been felt.
Not only has he been terrific at everything a full-back should do, but he also ended up finding the back of the net against Aston Villa.
While the plan would be to play Coufal when fit, Johnson’s form gives David Moyes the luxury of not rushing the 29-year-old back into the side.
Coufal’s also admired by Jamie Carragher. Picking him in his Team of the Year for last season, Carragher said on Sky Sports [24/05/21], “At right-back I’ve gone for Vladimir Coufal, I love him. He plays week in, week out, has been brilliant and typifies West Ham’s season.”
We cannot wait to see Coufal back in action but Johnson is expected to give him a run for his money.
