West Ham midfielder Manuel Lanzini has revealed that David Moyes has given him a new role in the team and he is really enjoying it.

The Argentine joined the club back in 2015 on loan from Al Jazira as a traditional number ten and has often been played there or on the wing by Moyes and other managers during his time at the club.

But recently the Hammers have opted for a slightly different shape, with Lanzini used in a deeper midfield role.

Lanzini was speaking to the Evening Standard ahead of the club’s Carabao Cup quarter-final clash against Tottenham where he revealed why he is enjoying the new role so much and why he was asked to do it.

“The coach asked me to do this, to pull back to help the team keep the ball up to help the forwards,” says Lanzini.

“I like it, I like it because the pitch is ahead of me, I can see my teammates there so I can see them more clearly, and I have enough room there, yeah the truth is I really like playing in this position.

“We have a really good relationship, I can talk to him a lot, he knows me and how to manage me, we have a really good relationship. He’s someone you can talk to, and that’s really important.”

Lanzini’s goal output hasn’t been the most eye-catching since joining the Hammers but it seems as though his attributes are better used deeper anyway.

The 28-year-old has featured in each of West Ham’s last six games and has scored twice in that run.

His passing has always been one of his strengths, while he has the ability to dribble past an opponent too. All of that is useful when playing in a congested area of the pitch and it helps to open the pitch up a bit for the forwards.

His improved form has come at the same time as a dip in the team’s form, but Irons fans know how good of a player he is when he’s at the top of his game.

If he can keep up his good performances as and when Moyes gets the team winning games regularly again then he could become a really important part of the side going forward as he enters his eighth year in east London.
