West Ham have been in talks with the agent of Napoli attacker Lorenzo Insigne, according to Italian outlet Corriere della Sera.
The newspaper reports in its print edition (29 December, page 51) that the Hammers and Newcastle United are keen on the Italian international, 30, and they have asked Vincenzo Pisacane about potentially signing him.
However, neither are ready to offer more than the £3million-per-year Napoli have already presented to him.
Insigne has an offer of around £9.3million-per-year for five seasons from MLS side Toronto FC, but he has not signed it and could still opt to remain in Europe despite rejecting his club’s most recent offer.
West Ham could do with such an experienced forward in their attack, but he is a short-term option at best.
Insigne has four goals and five assists in 15 Serie A games so far in 2021-22 and has scored and assisted once in three Europa League appearances.
He scored twice in six games for Italy at the European Championship in the summer, helping them win it, and he clearly still has a lot to offer.
His return of 19 goals and seven assists in 35 league games last term is a reminder of what he is capable of, and the Hammers could use his European experience going forward.
However, they are not ready to break the bank to sign him, and that would not have done much to convince him.
Insigne will be tripling his wages should he move to the MLS, and it is hard to see West Ham agreeing to pay him that much – around £200,000-per-week.
David Moyes would love to sign a quality finisher in the January transfer window, and a player like the Italian will come in handy.
They are not keen to splash the cash and meet his personal demands, though, and that makes reaching an agreement impossible right now.
