West Ham have approached Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco for centre-back Benoit Badiashile, according to French journalist Santi Aouna.

The Foot Mercato reporter took to his personal Twitter account on Monday evening to claim that the Hammers have also contacted his agents and could soon table a bid for the 20-year-old.

Newcastle United are also keen on bringing Badiashile to the Premier League before the end of the January transfer window, with the London Stadium outfit facing fierce competition for his signature.

Time to get serious

The Hammers want to strengthen at the back, and the 6ft 4in France under-21 international has been on their radar for a while.

He has started nine league games this season, and Monaco could be willing to cash in on him this month if a juicy bid is tabled.

Badiashile could be the perfect long-term successor to Angelo Ogbonna, but they will have to pip moneybags Newcastle to his signature first.

Given their league position and recent growth under David Moyes, West Ham could hold an advantage in the race as they could be playing in the Champions League next season.

The Magpies could be playing in the Championship, and the youngster could opt for a team whose future is brighter at the moment.

The Irons have been one of the most lethal sides when it comes to aerial threats so far this term, and landing Badiashile will further boost their attacking prowess.

He boasts of the same height as Tomas Soucek, and having two of them in a team will definitely be a massive advantage at both ends of the pitch.

West Ham will need to make an offer capable of convincing both club and player and also beating that of Newcastle.
