Paul Merson believes West Ham are among a trio of Premier League clubs “sweating” on a Manchester United victory this weekend.

The Red Devils are currently under mountains of pressure after Sunday’s 5-0 home defeat at the hands of bitter rivals Liverpool, the latest harrowing result of a poor recent run of form that has seen them lose five of their last nine games.

That has allowed West Ham to leapfrog them in the table, and the Irons now sit three points and three places better off in fourth position.

Writing via his Sky Sports column on Friday [29/10/21], Merson is adamant that the Irons will want to see a Manchester United win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday evening, in order to preserve Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure at the club.

“Everybody in and around the race for the top four and Europe – West Ham, Arsenal, Leicester – will be sweating on Manchester United winning at Tottenham,” Merson said.

“The damning thing is they will want Manchester United to win so that Solskjaer stays.”

Ole at the West Ham wheel for CL qualification?

Champions League qualification looked like a pipedream for West Ham at the start of the season with the heavyweight quartet of Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United mooted as genuine title contenders.

The only obvious route to Europe’s premier club competition next season looked to be via the Europa League.

However, after nine Premier League games, expectations at the London Stadium are starting to rise as the Red Devils continue to falter under Solskjaer.

The longer they persist with the Norwegian, the more West Ham supporters will dream of finishing above them.

The Irons have already beaten Manchester United once this season – a 1-0 win at Old Trafford in the League Cup [22/09/21] – while their Premier League meeting at the London Stadium three days prior saw the away side secure the narrowest of 2-1 victories after Mark Noble had a last-gasp penalty saved.

It’s Ole in for Hammers fans at the moment, and probably the rest of the Premier League.

In other West Ham news, Jim White has shared a major GSB update on Friday with a behind-the-scenes Irons document signed.
