We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie suggests West Ham have already signed a centre-back ahead of the January transfer window.

The Irons have been heavily linked with a move for a centre-back next month after long-term injuries to Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna, leaving just Craig Dawson and Issa Diop as senior centre-halves.

Manchester City’s Nathan Ake and Liverpool’s Nat Phillips are just two of the names that have been touted for a transfer to the London Stadium, and ex-Irons star McAvennie suggests David Moyes has already agreed a deal for a defender behind the scenes.

“I’ve seen about 10 centre-halves linked with West Ham,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.“I know Ake’s been mentioned.

“David’s a shrewd Scotsman and I think, knowing David, he might even have a deal done already. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s got one over the line already.”

Zouma and Ogbonna aren’t the only injured players in defence, with Aaron Cresswell, Ben Johnson and Ryan Fredericks all missing recent games.

Dawson, Diop, Vladimir Coufal and Arthur Masuaku started in the back four against Arsenal on Wednesday (15 December) as the Gunners ran out 2-0 winners at the Emirates Stadium.

That’s an entirely different backline to the one that has been favoured by Moyes in recent months.

In other West Ham news, Neil Warnock launched into an on-air rant over a recent Irons player controversy.
