England Collapse Down Under

Well, the Ashes are back! With England playing against the Old Enemy Down Under, high hopes were held for England to come out on top. But, it hasn’t started well!

Worst Possible Start!

It took one ball..that’s right…one ball for the rot to start, when Rory Burns was bowled by Aussie paceman Starc. And, as they say, start as you mean to go on, and England sure did, dragging themselves to a miserly score of only 147 from only 50 overs.

Whilst it is true that the preparation hasn’t been as good as they would have liked, the boys simply collapsed against the Aussie pace attack, with new captain Pat Cummins taking a ‘five for’.

Root Needs To Put The Bunny Back In The Hat…

England captain Joe Root, a solid and productive top order batsman..usually…didn’t lead from the front today, falling for nought after facing only 9 deliveries. However, even though any batsman can have a bad day, Root should be concerned, as he has now fallen 8 times in 14 tests to Hazlewood, and 7 times in 11 tests to Cummins

How The Pundits Saw It…

For the record, here is how some of those closest saw the day, according to the BBC:

“I was very surprised by England’s team. I found it quite hard to believe – a really difficult decision to work out. You lost James Anderson, although he was fit to play we’re told, but you can understand why with Adelaide next week you wouldn’t want to risk him…Broad is fit and he’s absolutely got the sign over this top order. What will have Australia thought when they saw he wasn’t playing?”

Jonathan Agnew

“It’s all gone to plan so far today. I’m proud of all the guys. We stayed really composed. I was probably going to have a bat, but I wasn’t upset to lose the toss. It was 50-50.”
