West Ham target Benoit Badiashile will miss two to three weeks through injury, plunging any potential transfer this month into doubt according to Fabrizio Romano.
The young Monaco defender has emerged as a serious target for both Newcastle United and West Ham this month [Santi Aouna], with both clubs keen to sign a new central defender.
But after picking up an injury during the club’s 0-0 draw with Nantes at the weekend, Romano tweeted out that he is expected to miss the rest of the month and that could plunge any deal into doubt.
Badiashile has been a regular in defence in Ligue 1 this season, starting nine times and coming on as a substitute on three occasions this season.
It’s believed that Monaco want up to £35m [Daily Mail] for their 6ft 4 defender but a deal was always expected to be tough to do this month.
If West Ham are to pursue a deal for the 20-year-old Badiashile, then they’ll have to take a gamble on his potential coming good.
It’s clear that he is a very talented young defender, but with such a big cost attached to him currently and with Newcastle sniffing around for a move this month it’s possible the Hammers could get rushed into a deal.
The interest is obvious because his size and athleticism make him a great fit for the Premier League, while his ability on the ball also stands out as a defender.
The Hammers are in need of a centre-back and with both Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson the wrong side of 30, plus Issa Diop not very happy, a younger profile player could be exactly what they need.
To rush through a deal this month at such a big fee would undoubtedly be a gamble though, so West Ham should think quickly and carefully.
