We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie is thrilled at suggestions West Ham are the frontrunners to sign West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.
ExWHUemployee, of the West Ham Way podcast, claims the England shot-stopper, 28, is set to leave the Baggies at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.
Johnstone’s contract with the West Midlands side expires in the summer and the Irons are reportedly in pole position to secure his services.
McAvennie is delighted to hear the level of players now being linked with a move to the London Stadium.
“You’ve just got to admire where West Ham are going at the moment,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone. “Just the fact that we’re mentioning top goalkeepers shows we’re going in the right direction, which is great.
“The people we were talking about last year weren’t on the calibre of these [players].
“The fans will be loving it.”
One to leave East London?
The Irons currently have two top goalkeepers at the club in Lukasz Fabianski and Alphonse Areola.
However, Fabianski is 36-years-old and 28-year-old Areola is only on loan from French giants PSG.
The chance to sign a homegrown player, who is likely to command cheaper wages than the Irons duo, could prove too good an opportunity to pass up.
Johnstone, currently playing in the Championship, was named in Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2020.
In other club-related news, Stuart Pearce issued an on-air answer when asked on Thursday if the Irons are set to sign Jesse Lingard in January.
