We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie believes that West Ham need to find another striker to provide some competition and backup for Michail Antonio.

The former Irons forward would love to see his old side bring through a youth prospect, but if they didn’t do that, he would like to see them buy someone in January.

The Hammers only have Antonio as their one first-team forward, so you can see why McAvennie wants to see another player arrive.

Speaking exclusively to the West Ham Zone, he said: “I would love to see another striker.

“Unless there is someone else coming through. I would love to see them unearth another Tony Cottee through the ranks.

“I think if another player comes in, there is going to be a fight for the place, which is great.

“They’ll be playing in the League Cup, they’ll be playing in the FA Cup, the Europa League [possibly] the Champions League next year. Antonio is going to be the number one, and the new boy’s got to [win] that off him.

Antonio is such a pro; he’ll relish that. He’ll relish the fact he’ll get a rest. So whether it’s somebody coming through or whether they buy somebody. I am looking forward to January, that’s for sure.”

McAvennie is spot on.

Antonio had injury problems last season, but he has managed to stay fit so far and also played a good number of games [transfermarkt].

David Moyes tries to rest him when he can, but that isn’t always possible, so the 31-year-old possibly plays a bit more than he should.

However, with January approaching, the Irons can change that and bring in someone who is willing to compete with the forward and would be willing to play as a rotation option as well.

That could be a hard sell, but you can see why McAvennie believes that the Irons need another forward.

It is interesting that he mentioned the academy, and that would also be fantastic, but it doesn’t appear as if any of the current young strikers are that close to the first team given Moyes’ reliance on Antonio.

January should be very interesting, and it would be shocking if the Hammers didn’t buy another striker.

In other West Ham news, a major change at the club has been shared by a new report.
