The former Irons forward would love to see his old side bring through a youth prospect, but if they didn’t do that, he would like to see them buy someone in January.
“Unless there is someone else coming through. I would love to see them unearth another Tony Cottee through the ranks.
“I think if another player comes in, there is going to be a fight for the place, which is great.
“They’ll be playing in the League Cup, they’ll be playing in the FA Cup, the Europa League [possibly] the Champions League next year. Antonio is going to be the number one, and the new boy’s got to [win] that off him.
“Antonio is such a pro; he’ll relish that. He’ll relish the fact he’ll get a rest. So whether it’s somebody coming through or whether they buy somebody. I am looking forward to January, that’s for sure.”
McAvennie is spot on.
David Moyes tries to rest him when he can, but that isn’t always possible, so the 31-year-old possibly plays a bit more than he should.
It is interesting that he mentioned the academy, and that would also be fantastic, but it doesn’t appear as if any of the current young strikers are that close to the first team given Moyes’ reliance on Antonio.
