Gary Lineker, Dion Dublin and Danny Murphy agreed on Match of the Day with the referee’s decision to award Arsenal a penalty against West Ham on Wednesday night.

Alexandre Lacazette went down after a challenge from Vladimir Coufal at the Emirates yesterday (15 December), and the Hammers right-back was sent off after a second yellow card, while the hosts were awarded a spotkick.

The French striker missed his effort after a super save from Lukasz Fabianski, and while some have insisted it was not a penalty in the first place, the MotD trio supported Anthony Taylor.

Dublin said: “I actually think he’s there well before Lacazette, and that should be a simple challenge, he should take the ball.”

Murphy replied: “I don’t think Lacazette helps him, does he?

“He catches him, but he’s up 20 seconds later, ready to take the penalty.”

Lineker then said: “Why should Lacazette help him, I suppose?”

Murphy: “It’s a foul, it is a penalty, but you don’t have to roll over 17 times because that puts it in the ref’s head as well.”

Fair enough

Looking at the replays, it can be argued that Coufal indeed caught the Arsenal striker, and while a penalty was awarded, should he have been shown a second yellow card?

The fact that Taylor opted not to check his pitchside monitor was baffling.

He would have been better informed had he done that, and West Ham are right to feel cheated.

Lacazette made a meal of the challenge and should not have rolled on the floor countless times just to fool the ref.

That definitely aided Taylor’s decision, and the full-back was clearly not happy.

The Hammers could not match the Gunners, eventually succumbing to a 2-0 loss, but things could have been different had they ended the game with 10 men.

The red card affected the game, but Taylor should have done better.

West Ham will hope to quickly put that behind them ahead of weekend’s clash against Norwich City.

Wednesday ‘s defeat saw them drop out of the top-four, but a win against the Canaries on Saturday (18 December) will come in handy.
