West Ham found themselves trailing 1-0 at half-time against Southampton at the London Stadium on Boxing Day.

The visitors took the lead eight minutes into the game through Mohamed Elyounoussi, and goalkeeper Fraser Forster immediately resorted to time-wasting, with Hammers fans getting frustrated by it, according to Sky Sports’ Ben Grounds.

Southampton started the game pretty well, and it appears the plan is to hold on to the 1-0 lead and frustrate West Ham.

The broadcaster posted on their live commentary of the game on their website: “We’ve barely played 15 minutes as referee Kevin Friend has already warned Fraser Forster about his time wasting at the goal-kick. Groans from the home fans.”

Too early

There are still 45 minutes to play, and given that a lot can still happen, opting to waste time in the first-half makes no sense.

West Ham will be looking to bounce back, and they did show some signs few minutes after going behind.

While Declan Rice picked up a yellow card that rules him out of the next clash with Watford, the England international midfielder will be hoping to make up for it with an impressive second-half display.

David Moyes’ men have won just two of their last seven Premier League games, and they cannot afford to lose against the Saints.

They need to pick up all three points to keep their top-four hopes alive, and failure to do so could be a massive blow.

Michail Antonio started the game on the bench, with Jarrod Bowen leading the line, and West Ham could be forced to throw him into action immediately play restarts.
