We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie is delighted to hear reports that West Ham are stepping up their pursuit of signing a new centre-forward in January.

According to Swiss outlet 4-4-2.ch (29 November), Basel striker Arthur Cabral, 23, is the subject of a £17million bid by the East London club, with Goal also reporting last week (26 November) that talks had been opened with the Brazilian’s representatives.

Denmark forward Jonas Wind, 22, is also being eyed by David Moyes, with FC Copenhagen placing an £11.5million price tag on his head [Mirror, 1 December].

McAvennie suggests the signing of a new striker will lift standards at the London Stadium and help out 31-year-old Michail Antonio.

Antonio will understand, it’s a long season, he’ll probably be happy at getting swapped sometimes for another striker,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.

Antonio does get injured so I get that they want to bring a striker in. If they’re going to spend that kind of money then it’s going to be a hell of a help because the competition for the number one spot up front is going to be very healthy.”

Goals galore

Wind has scored 11 times this season while Cabral already has 25 goals in 26 games in all competitions this season, after netting 20 times in 36 appearances last term.

If the Irons are successful with their reported £17million offer for Cabral, it would make him the 12th most expensive player in the club’s history, and their second most expensive centre-forward [Transfermarkt].

Cabral has played once for the Brazil Under-23 team while he was handed his maiden international call up in October 2021.

In other club-related news, Stuart Pearce issued an on-air answer when asked on Thursday if the Irons are set to sign Jesse Lingard in January.
