Andy Townsend suggested live-on-air that the decision to show the red card to West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal was harsh.

In the second half, Coufal picked up his second booking for
his challenge on Alexandre Lacazette as West Ham lost 2-0 against Arsenal in
the Premier League clash on Wednesday night.

The referee, Anthony Taylor, gave Arsenal the penalty as a natural consequence, which was saved by Lukasz Fabianski.

“It’s a harsh call. I really do. There’s nothing in there for Vladimir Coufal to go over the top and catch Lacazette in the box,” said Townsend to Premier League Tv Productions.

“Yes, it’s a little high, I agree, but I do think he made
enough contact with the ball there.”

Poor decision

Fabianski did save the penalty from Lacazette, but West Ham
went down to 10-men.

The Hammers players were justifiably angry with the
decision, because the replays showed he had played the ball before there was a contact
with the French striker.

Interestingly, David Moyes said (15 December) after the game that Coufal is to blame, not the referee [BBC Match of the Day].

The Czech international, who was already on a yellow card,
committed a foul and that angered the Hammers boss.

Moyes felt that it was an easy tackle to make and that Coufal could have made a good block here.

However, Coufal and West Ham fans have every right to be angry about it. Peter Bankes, the VAR in charge of the game, didn’t ask Taylor to have a look at the pitchside monitor and make a final decision.

West Ham have now failed to win in their last four away games in the Premier League.

The Hammers have picked up just one win in their last six games so far, and they should be looking to return to winning ways when they face Norwich City next Saturday.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have identified their next signing from the Championship.
