Gabriel Barbosa is set for crunch talks with Flamengo today with a bid from West Ham still on the table for the striker, according to Sky Sports News journalist Dharmesh Sheth.
Speaking on Sky Sports News on Wednesday, Sheth reported that Gabigol, 25, is keen on a move to England this month and wants discussions with his agents and his club.
West Ham have reportedly offered Flamengo a deal to take Gabigol on loan for 18 months, with a £25million option to buy the Brazil international permanently.
“Earlier in this window, I was talking about West Ham’s interest in the Flamengo striker Gabriel Barbosa,” Sheth said on Sky Sports News’ Transfer Show on Wednesday night, as quoted on the online Transfer Centre [07:17pm].
“It all went quiet, and we thought that interest had gone away.
“In the past few minutes, I am told West Ham’s offer to Flamengo is still on the table. I’ve been told it’s not been withdrawn and the interest does remain.
“A reminder of West Ham’s proposal, an 18-month loan plus a €30m (£25m) option to buy.
“Flamengo do not want to loan or sell Barbosa in this transfer window, but I’m also told Gabigol has a meeting with his agents and Flamengo officials tomorrow (Thursday) in which he will make it clear to them that he wants to make a move to England. He believes this is the right time to test himself once more.
“He feels he has unfinished business in European football and sees England as the ideal place to showcase his talents.”
Gabigol has been on fire in Brazil.
In the 2021 season, the striker scored 29 goals in 43 appearances across all competitions.
He fired Flamengo to the Copa Libertadores final and scored in a 2-1 defeat against Palmeiras in South America’s biggest club competition.
Gabigol is also a regular for Brazil, playing in six of their last eight matches and in total, scoring five goals in 17 appearances.
It’s clear that the ex-Santos striker knows where the back of the net is – but he struggled to even get game-time in his previous spell in Europe.
Gabigol played for Inter Milan and scored one goal in 10 appearances for them and a loan spell at Benfica saw him get just five games and scoring once in that time.
Can he shine in the Premier League? We’ll have to wait and see but he wouldn’t be a regular starter for us and would just serve as a back-up for Michail Antonio – for now.
