Mark Lawrenson believes the bad run of form will continue when West Ham take on Southampton this weekend according to his BBC Sport predictions.
The Hammers take on Southampton at the London Stadium on Boxing Day, looking to end a run of just one win in seven games recently.
They crashed out of the Carabao Cup in midweek after suffering defeat to Tottenham, and Lawrenson has backed the Saints to continue that by leaving London with a 2-1 win.
The Saints haven’t won in six games themselves, but Lawrenson told BBC Sport that he thinks that they will be able to nick a win if West Ham can’t up their performance levels.
“It will help the Hammers if Michail Antonio is back to lead the line after a period isolating with Covid, but I can see their bad run continuing.
“Southampton are a difficult team to predict and they haven’t won for a while either – six games to be exact – but if West Ham don’t play well again and this gets scrappy, then I can see Saints nicking it.”
The Irons have struggled massively in recent weeks with their form, with key injuries playing a big part in their lack of results.
Angelo Ogbonna is out for the season, while Kurt Zouma and Aaron Cresswell are long-term absentees too. Antonio has struggled with his form too as being the only attacking option for the striker role, so it’s no surprise Moyes’ side are struggling.
But with the chase for the Champions League places heating up, West Ham can’t afford to drop too many more points.
It’ll be tough for them to maintain the sort of form they’ve kept up over the last 18 months anyway, but Moyes will know the best way of getting the best out of his team and that will start with getting all three points here.
In other West Ham news, four changes expected for Hammers game against the Saints.
