West Ham will struggle to get a result away at Manchester City on Sunday, according to Mark Lawrenson.
The Hammers trail Pep Guardiola’s side by just three points in
the Premier League table ahead of their meeting at the Etihad Stadium.
After a run of four successive league wins, David Moyes’s side fell to a 1-0 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend.
BBC pundit Lawrenson believes they will suffer another loss
against the current champions, backing City to win 2-0.
“Manchester City seem to have found a bit of rhythm since the international break,” he wrote in his latest predictions column on the BBC website.
“They went through the gears to beat Everton last weekend
and then played very well in their win against Paris St-Germain on Wednesday.
“We saw the Hammers put in a really impressive performance
to beat Liverpool a couple of weeks ago, but I just wonder if they might hit a
bit of a sticky patch after their good run was ended by Wolves.
“They will have to be back at their best to have any chance of leaving Etihad Stadium with anything at all, because I am backing City here.”
A trip to the Etihad Stadium is certainly a daunting task
for any team, but West Ham have proved this season that on their day they are
capable of competing with the league’s very best.
To suggest that they have hit a “sticky patch” after just
one narrow loss seems a slightly knee-jerk reaction from Lawrenson, particularly
as a much-changed Hammers side bounced back from defeat at Molineux with a 2-0
win over Rapid Vienna in the Europa League.
Everyone knows how good Manchester City can be and Pep Guardiola’s side are on a good run of form, yet that does not mean they are averse to a surprise defeat; Crystal Palace went to the Etihad Stadium and won 2-0 at the end of last month.
Of course West Ham will be underdogs, but with the way they have performed this season and considering the team spirit in the squad, it would seem naïve to write them off so ferociously.
In other West Ham news, a Hammers outcast has been tipped for a move to the Championship in January.
