We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie has backed the signing of Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah amid a reported approach by West Ham.

Nketiah, 22, has played just twice for the Gunners this season, scoring in League Cup outings against AFC Wimbledon and Leeds United.

However, with his contract expiring in the summer of 2022, the “powerful” centre-forward [Mikel Arteta, Arsenal official website] looks likely to leave the Emirates Stadium soon, and LondonWorld claim David Moyes’ side have contacted their Premier League rivals over a potential move.

Ex-Irons star McAvennie has delivered his verdict on his old club potentially signing Nketiah, approving when it was suggested that Michail Antonio could prove to be the perfect teacher for him at the London Stadium.

“I think so,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone. “And obviously [Kevin] Nolan was a top striker so he’ll be teaching the boy.

“It’s an ideal situation because he’ll get game time, it may not be enough for a top striker to come in.

“It would make a lot of sense.”

Nketiah has just three Premier League goals to his name in his career so far, but he has mainly been used as a late substitute.

He has a reputation as a proflic frontman, though, scoring regularly at youth level, particularly at international level with England for whom he is the England Under-21’s all-time top goalscoreres.

In other West Ham news, this Bundesliga star hailed as ‘one of the best’ is open to an Irons move after talks.
