Declan Rice can go to ‘another level’ if he adds goals to his game according to former West Ham academy director Tony Carr.

Rice has come through the Hammers academy and become and indispensable member of the first-team over the last few years, becoming vice-captain behind Mark Noble.

As he prepares to make his 150th Premier League appearance for the club, The Athletic have done interviews with several people that hold importance to Rice’s career to date.

One of those is Carr, who helped bring Rice to the club after he was released by Chelsea as a schoolboy. Carr believes that the 23-year-old midfielder has all the tools to become an elite box-to-box midfielder but says there is one area in particular he can improve to go to ‘another level’.

“If he could score more goals a season that would be brilliant,” he said. “There will be moments in the game where he finds himself in advanced positions. If he can add goals to his game that will take him to another level.”

The best

It’s quite clear that Rice is West Ham’s best and most important player, which is some statement considering the talent they have at their disposal these days.

Rice is the glue that holds it all together for David Moyes’ side and is a big reason for their unbelievable run over the last 18 months that saw them finish in the European places last season, and then follow that by sitting fifth in the Premier League this season and in the knockout stages of the Europa League.

But as his game has evolved this season from a holding midfielder to a more box-to-box player, there are clear gaps for improvement in his style if he is to become the elite star many have earmarked him to be.

That doesn’t mean he isn’t already great, because he is, and Hammers fans are lucky to be able to call him one of their own.

But the challenge has been set on how Rice can go up another level, so now fans must wait to see if he can rise to it.
