West Ham travel to The Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal on Wednesday (15 December), and Paul Merson does not see them winning the London derby.

The Hammers struggled to break down a resolute Burnley defence at the weekend, while the Gunners strolled to a comfortable 3-0 win over Southampton and will be looking to win in front of their fans when David Moyes’ men come visiting.

Merson reckons his old team should edge out West Ham, predicting a 2-1 victory for them while previewing the clash in his Sportskeeda column.

The Sky Sports pundit said: “Wow, what a game this could turn out to be! West Ham played really well against Burnley but they couldn’t score.

“If Arsenal win this one, they’ll go above West Ham in the Premier League standings and that’s rather unbelievable considering where the two sides were a few weeks ago.

“I think Arsenal will win this one, they’ll make their home advantage count. West Ham look a bit tired at times and tend to rely on a group of players too much, which has started to show a bit in recent weeks.

“As for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, I don’t think he will return to the team immediately. He was punished by Mikel Arteta and wasn’t part of the matchday squad for the Premier League encounter against Southampton, so I’ll be shocked if he was named in the starting XI for this one.”

Possibly?

It’s a six-pointer on Wednesday, and not many would bet against the Irons leaving North London with all three points.

Despite their disappointing draw on Sunday (12 December), the Hammers have produced the goods against the top teams in 2021-22, securing impressive wins at the expense of the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, while also sealing cup victories over Manchester United and Manchester City.

Arsenal will be a tough test for them, but the Gunners are not better than some of the teams Moyes’ men have defeated.

It is the smaller teams that have given them problems as they have dropped points against Crystal Palace, Southampton, Brentford, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brighton and Hove Albion this season.

Arsenal vs West Ham is likely to be a high-scoring game, and while there are no favourites, the London Stadium outfit will be playing for a win in order to retain their place in fourth position in the Premier League table.
