We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie is happy to see West Ham finally get the rub of the green when it comes to a controversial VAR decision.

On Sunday, Manuel Lanzini’s goal was allowed to stand in the 2-0 win over Leeds in the FA Cup, despite replays seeming to show Jarrod Bowen in an offside position in the build-up.

There was somewhat of a goal-mouth scramble prior to Lanzini sticking the ball in the back of the net to open the scoring at the London Stadium and in that, Nikola Vlasic seem to touch the ball forward, prompting Bowen to run onto it and try to win a challenge.

While McAvennie isn’t a fan of VAR, he’s clearly happy that a dodgy decision finally went in favour of the Hammers.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, he said: “I’ve can remember sitting here on several occasions talking about VAR decisions going against West Ham.

We’re not talking about the referee as much now and we’re talking about VAR. People don’t talk about the referee anymore because once the ref makes a decision, you think, ‘that’s it’.

VAR is so controversial, it’s incredible.

How far do you go back to stop a goal and all that kind of stuff because it’s as if they couldn’t make up their mind.

We’re always talking about VAR and the thing with Bowen, I’m quite happy we’ve got a decision at last.

They were on top of their game against Leeds, they were the better team so there’s no way they didn’t deserve to win.”
