Former West Ham midfielder Trevor Sinclair believes an ‘unreasonable’ amount of games is the reason behind the Hammers’ recent poor run of results.

The Hammers earned a 4-1 win over Watford on Tuesday afternoon to end a run of just one win in eight games in all competitions and just one win in five in the Premier League.

When discussing the recent form though, talkSPORT pundit Sinclair believes there is an obvious answer as to why they’ve been struggling recently.

The former Irons midfielder was speaking live on air when he explained that the number of games in a short period are ‘unreasonable’ and said the small size of West Ham’s squad plays a factor.

“It was only four games ago that they beat Chelsea,” he said. “So it shows they have got the quality. The start they’ve had to the season, everyone’s been full of praise for David Moyes and his coaching staff, and the players, and rightly so.

“The London Stadium has been buzzing, everyone’s been enjoying watching the football, the creativity as well going forward. Benrahma, doing superbly well, Bowen has been a huge plus point and seems to have improved this season again. Antonio has started to play for Jamaica and scored a couple of bangers for them, playing well for us. It’s just the amount of games.

“It’s unreasonable and I heard David Moyes say it’s unreasonable to think that they can play like that all season with a relatively small squad. And it’s true.”

“It was only 4 games ago that #WHUFC beat #CFC. They have the quality!”

True and false

While the idea that West Ham have played a lot of games and it’s affecting their results has got some truth to it, some of the blame simply has to be put on Moyes for that.

The manager has largely stuck with a starting lineup that picks itself this season in the league and that will have contributed to the lack of fitness of others and the tiredness of those selected.

The Christmas schedule is always packed with fixtures and while they have rotated in Europe a fair amount, when the league games have needed fresh blood they haven’t been able to provide.

With that said the defensive injuries to Angelo Ogbonna, Kurt Zouma and Aaron Cresswell are all a huge problem too and have certainly contributed.

Hammers fans will be delighted that they have ended the year with a big victory and with a decent break between now and their next fixture, they will hope to see a return to the form that saw them largely praised throughout 2021.
