We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive West Ham United columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium...

Keith Hackett is adamant that West Ham were rightly awarded a goal in the first half of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Liverpool.

The Irons took the lead at the London Stadium courtesy of an Alisson Becker own-goal in the fourth minute following a corner routine.

However, Liverpool players, in particular Alisson, were furious at the decision, which was checked by VAR, believing that the Brazilian goalkeeper had been unfairly impeded by Angelo Ogbonna.

Jurgen Klopp was also critical of the opening goal of the game. The Reds boss told Sky Sports: “The first goal is a foul on the goalie. The arm goes against Alisson’s arm so how can he catch the ball when someone pulls his arm away. It makes no sense. It’s the typical excuse that VAR says it’s not clear and obvious but then what do you need?”

But former Premier League referee Hackett, speaking to West Ham Zone, has shot down Klopp’s claims and told him to point the finger of blame closer to home after their 3-2 defeat in the capital.

“That was a perfectly good goal, there’s no offence on the goalkeeper,” Hackett told West Ham Zone.

“I think it’s a goalkeeping error. Don’t blame the referee in this situation, Mr Klopp. You should be having words about your goalkeeper and not necessarily about the referee on that one.

“At the end of the day, you expect the goalkeeper to make a bit of effort. So for me, I think it’s just poor goalkeeping, full stop. Nothing wrong in law, a perfectly good goal.”

In other West Ham news, Darren Gough predicts the Irons to make a major move in the January transfer window to sign this player.
