We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie suggests there should be no worries over at West Ham after Aston Villa appointed Steven Gerrard as their new manager this week.
The Midlands giants announced last Sunday [07/11/21] that they had parted ways with Dean Smith after five successive defeats, and Gerrard subsequently left Rangers to succeed him.
Villa were well-backed in the summer transfer window and are expected to make further outlays in the coming months after the big-name arrival of Gerrard.
However, ex-Irons star McAvennie, who also played for Villa, doesn’t think they will pose an imminent threat to David Moyes’ side.
“Listen, I get it, but West Ham’s taken a long time [to come together],” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.
“They’ve got a new manager to take them. Aston Villa have got a good squad. The biggest thing for me is Steven Gerrard has taken his old backroom staff. Gerrard’s man-management is obviously good, he can talk to players in one-on-ones, sit them down and tell them right from wrong. I think he’ll do well for Villa.”
West Ham are currently third in the Premier League table and 13 points ahead of 16th-placed Villa, so there should be no concern that Villa will cause them any trouble this season.
However, they should certainly be looking to push on and challenge for the European spots next season, and that could makes Moyes’ job much harder with the Irons.
But that’s what they should be expecting anyway – the Premier League is no walk in the park, despite the Irons making it look that way in recent weeks.
As long as Moyes is backed in the transfer market, there should be no danger of the East London side being usurped by Villa any time soon.
In other West Ham news, the Irons are readying a bid to sign this 31-cap South-American star.
