West Ham centre-back Angelo Ogbonna is set for an extended spell on the sidelines after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament against Liverpool.
The 33-year-old was replaced by Craig Dawson 22 minutes into the game and will now start his recovery in a bid to return to action sooner rather than later.
Ogbonna has taken to his personal Instagram account to send a message to West Ham fans after the club confirmed the incident on Monday.
The Italian said: “Dear Hammers, Unfortunately, as you know, my knee forces me to take a break from the field, to heal myself and return as soon as possible to fight with you for what we deserve.
“Of course I am devastated I can’t continue our battle from the field, but you can trust that, as a fighter, I will be back and until my return I will be with you supporting the team in this truly special year.
“See you soon, guys!”
Former Hammers loanee Jesse Lingard and Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku are among those that have taken to the comment section to send their best wishes to the defender.
The Blues star said: “Come on, brother.”
Ogbonna will be absolutely gutted after seeing his fine start to the campaign get curtailed by injury, and he needs everyone’s love and support right now.
He could have played his last game of the season given the severity of ACL injuries, and hopefully, he returns sooner than expected.
West Ham will hugely miss the reliable service he brings to the table, and David Moyes will be racking his brains concerning the next course of action.
Dawson and Issa Diop will be expected to challenge for the chance to line up alongside Kurt Zouma in defence, but the duo will need to step up their games to stop the manager from making a new addition to the backline in January.
Third-placed West Ham have a huge challenge on their hands if they want to sustain their momentum going forward following Ogbonna’s injury, and Moyes will be distraught.
Hopefully, the blow does not derail their campaign, and how they respond to it would be very crucial.
