Neil Warnock was left ranting about referees via talkSPORT on Thursday morning (16 December) after West Ham lost 2-0 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Gabriel Martinelli and Emile Smith-Rowe struck the goals for the Gunners on Wednesday (15 December) but the big controversy of the night came from the decision that led to Lukasz Fabianski saving Alexandre Lacazette’s penalty kick.

Vladimir Coufal was penalised for a challenge on Martinelli and, in the process, picked up a second yellow card that saw him sent off and the Irons reduced to 10 men.

“Neil I was thinking of you last night when that penalty decision was given at the Emirates Stadium,” talkSPORT host Alan Brazil said. “I thought ‘oh my god’, if you were David Moyes standing there you would have gone ballistic, wouldn’t you?”

Ex-Crystal Palace manager Warnock replied: “They don’t understand the game, they understand the rules. They make themselves look silly. They don’t want to contradict the referee so they all go along with it. It’s just not right. I just don’t understand why they don’t get people involved that know the game.

“They’ve got to really think about the VAR because it’s not working as it is. I mean, last night, everybody that’s played the game knows that.”

Moyes disagrees

Surprisingly, Moyes opted not to take umbrage with the decision in his post-match interview, instead focusing on what he deemed to be a poor challenge by Coufal.

That’s not a view shared by many, particularly from those of an Irons persuasion.

Even Arsenal fan Darren Bent disagreed, calling it “shocking”.

But taskmaster Moyes obviously believes Coufal did not match up to the high standards he has previously set, and has urged more from him.

What the decision from referee Anthony Taylor does mean, though, is that Coufal will miss West Ham’s next game – against Norwich City at the London Stadium on Saturday (18 December).

With injuries to Angelo Ogbonna, Kurt Zouma, Aaron Cresswell, Ryan Fredericks and Ben Johnson already hurting the Irons, Coufal’s suspension is another hammer blow.

Moyes will hope at least one or two of them can return for the weekend, otherwise, it could be square pegs in round holes.

In other West Ham news, Darren Bent went ballistic at this Irons player incident against Arsenal.
