Tony Mowbray has suggested that Blackburn Rovers are not looking to sell Ben Brereton Diaz in January, amid strong interest from West Ham and other Premier League clubs.
According to reports from Evening Standard, the Hammers are keen to sign the exciting Chilean striker who is enjoying a rich vein of form.
The Hammers need to bolster their forward department this month, and they still retain a keen interest in Brereton Diaz. It would take somewhere between £15-£20million to secure his signature.
While anything can happen in a transfer window, Mowbray has made it clear that chances are “unlikely” that clubs would make a move for the Rovers striker.
“I’ve been in football a long time and if someone comes and offers £50m then I’m sure that stance might change. Let’s be honest about it,” said Mowbray, as quoted by Lancashire Telegraph.
“We sold Armstrong for £15m going up to £20m, Ben Brereton is two years younger than Adam and scored more goals in the first half of the season so it would have to be at least that.
“Is a team going to bid that for Ben Brereton in January? I think that’s highly unlikely and I think the owners are putting the right message out there for our supporters.”
Mowbray has made it clear how much they are looking for
Brereton, and to be honest, it’s a fair price.
Obviously, no club would pay £50m for the Chilean, but anything between £15-20million could still secure a deal for him, and that’s what the Hammers should target.
As of now, there has been no enquiries for the striker who has scored 20 goals this season. The landscape could change, especially with the Hammers needing to sign a striker.
Rovers are second in the Championship and they are looking
at automatic promotion. From their perspective, it’s understandable why they want
to keep him.
At 22, the Chilean is in no rush to move to the Premier
League. He is enjoying his football here. But money speaks, and Rovers know
that as well.
West Ham absolutely need to sign a striker this month. They have to fight for the top-four spot and cannot go an entire season with Michail Antonio being their only striker.
