West Ham striker Michail Antonio has gone seven Premier League games without a goal in 2021-22, drawing blank again in the goalless draw against Burnley on Sunday.

BBC Match of the Day 2 pundit Glenn Murray believes the Jamaican international, 31, is struggling because of the absence of left-back Aaron Cresswell.

The defender, 31, has missed the Hammers’ last three league games due to injury, but he could be available for selection when they visit Arsenal on Wednesday (15 December).

Murray said yesterday (12 December): “Yes, he’s (in the right place), he’s constantly in the right place, sniffing around, looking for that ball.

“He finds space when the box is packed. I think he’s missing Cresswell. Cresswell gives him that width, and he puts in a really good ball from the left.”

Possibly?

Cresswell has four assists across all competitions so far this term, and his influence on the Hammers attack cannot be overemphasised.

The West Ham ace constantly creates chances for the forwards and is their set-piece taker when fit, so it is safe to say that Antonio has hugely missed him.

While the striker is guilty of missing chances, it has to be stated that Arthur Masuaku has not been able to provide him with quality crosses similar to that of Cresswell’s.

In the seven games that the Irons hitman did not score, he managed to grab an assist – in the 3-2 win against Chelsea – once, and they won just thrice, losing twice and drawing twice.

It is safe to say that West Ham rely on him a lot, and he needs to add to his tally of six goals in 15 games very soon.

They also need to bring in a quality cover in the January transfer window as their overdependence on Antonio could hurt their top-four chances during the second half of the campaign.
