David Moyes is ready to give youngsters a chance as West Ham look to deal with their injury crisis in defence

Kurt Zouma appears set for up to three months on the sidelines after his hamstring injury against Chelsea, according to The Guardian, with Angelo Ogbonna already out for the season.

Potential replacements in the January transfer window have been suggested but Moyes wants to look at some of the younger players in his squad before he makes a decision

“We will play some young players. I’m really looking forward to giving some of them their debuts. I’m so keen for them to do well,” said the Scot via Sky Sports.

“But we will have a lot of senior players involved as well,” added Moyes.

Time to step up

Big injuries to key defenders have threatened to derail West Ham’s excellent start to the season and while new signings instantly make the headlines it makes sense to look closer to home in the first instance.

This is particularly true considering the cost and the difficulty of recruiting adequate cover via the transfer market in January, especially after shelling out close to £30m for Zouma from Chelsea

The Hammers are widely reported to be interested in Burnley’s James Tarkowski and Manchester City’s Nathan Ake.

With Tarkowski available for free in the summer and Burnley determined not to allow a cut-price deal before then, a loan move for Ake would make more sense.

But according to Jacob Steinberg of The Guardian, it is unlikely Ake will follow United’s Jesse Lingard as a successful loan from Manchester

So with the manager sounding positive on his youngsters, players like Alese, Ashby and Baptiste will get the chance to solve the problem for free.

In other West Ham news, the Irons could sign this ‘Incredible’ Salthouse striker in January after an on-air claim by a talkSPORT journalist.
