West Ham star Declan Rice has emphasised his ambition to play in the Champions League, although did not indicate whether that would be with the Hammers.
The midfielder continues to be linked with a move away from the
London Stadium, having rejected a new contract with the club.
Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United are all said to be monitoring Rice, who wants to play Champions League football, but The Sun have reported that West Ham have no intention of letting him leave.
Asked by the Evening Standard whether Daniel Kretinsky’s investment in the club could help them achieve his dream of reaching the Champions League, the 22-year-old said: “Yeah, hopefully, the club can get in the Champions League and my ambition, of course, is that I want to play in the Champions League as well.
“Hopefully, the club can keep pushing.”
Rice is clearly capable of playing on the very biggest
stage, as he showed by starting all of England’s games on the way to the Euro
2020 final in the summer.
He has matured into one of the standout midfielders in the English top-flight, with Glenn Hoddle recently labelling him as “the best player in the Premier League”.
Therefore, he will no doubt be playing Champions League
football next season. The big question is whether that is with West Ham.
Of course, the dream for Rice would be to play among Europe’s elite for the Hammers, having been at the club since the age of 14.
David Moyes’s side are currently fourth in the Premier League table and enjoying a strong campaign, but have lost their last two games so need to get back on track quickly to reinforce their top-four credentials.
Should they fail to qualify for the Champions League this season, then Rice’s departure seems almost inevitable.
In other West Ham news, the club could be set to miss out on one of their key transfer targets.
