David James has sent Michail Antonio a message on Twitter after the West Ham centre-forward’s first international goal for Jamaica on Saturday.
Antonio, 31, struck in the early hours of Saturday morning (UK time) in just his second appearance for Jamaica after deciding to represent them earlier this year.
The Irons attacker scored in the 82nd-minute to open the scoring against El Salvador but the hosts struck in the 90th-minute to draw the game 1-1 and hand each side a point in World Cup qualifying.
Despite Jamaica’s disappointment, ex-Irons shot-stopper James took to his personal Twitter profile to send a message to Antonio after a post on West Ham’s official Twitter account.
“Never a doubt,” James wrote.
Antonio has only just begun playing for Jamaica but he carries the weight of a nation on his back.
The Caribbean country have a number of UK-based players in their side, such as Derby County’s Ravel Morrison and Rangers’ Kemar Roofe, but alongside Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey, Antonio is clearly their best player.
He was restricted to a substitute outing in San Salvador on Saturday but he scored within eight minutes of his introduction, and what a goal it was.
Antonio produced a trademark goal as his pace and power saw him streak past the El Salvador defence before a delightful left-footed chip past the goalkeeper.
It wasn’t enough to claim the win in the end but Antonio has begun to make his mark on the international scene.
Jamaica face an uphill battle in their quest to qualify for Qatar 2022, but with Antonio in this form, anything is possible.
In other West Ham news, the Irons are readying a bid to sign this 31-cap South-American star.
