West Ham United finished their game with Aston Villa on Sunday with more than just a goal advantage after Ezri Konsa was sent off shortly after the restart.

The Villa defender was at first shown a yellow card, but a VAR intervention, he was shown a red because his challenge on Jarrod Bowen was deemed to prevent the Hammers a goalscoring opportunity.

Kortney Hause ws lucky to escape a red too after his elbow on Pablo Fornals, but he survived.

Lineker’s Input

BBC Match of the Day pundit Gary Lineker disagreed with the decision, saying that Hause, and not Konsa, should have been shown red.

He posted this on his personal Twitter account:

“No, no, no. The ball is going wide…It’s not denying a clear goal scoring opportunity. Not a red…The forearm smash, you could argue was a red, but not that one…No, no, no. The ball is going wide. Sinclair’s View

Trevor Sinclair wasn’t in full agreement with Lineker though, stating that he believes both Villa players were worthy of a red.

The West Ham star legend said:

“Should have been two red cards there.”

No Clear Answer...

West Ham undoubtedly benefitted by playing against 10-man Villa, but since Villa could have had both players sent off the situation could have been much worse for Dean Smith.

Hause was fortunate to escape after that challenge on Fornals and maybe should also have been giving his marching orders.

The referee probably took a different view on each challenge since one involved denying of a goal scoring opportunity…whilst the other didn’t.

Whether Lineker or Sinclair was right is open to debate…and there is no definitive answer. One thing is for sure, West Ham won, and did so deservedly…and comfortably.
