West Ham United 2 – Leeds United 3 (Half Time 1-2)

According to Football Legend Alan Smith – The second-half replacement of Nikola Vlasic was a harsh summing up of his game for West Ham v Leeds

Vlasic who cost £26.8million from CSKA Moscow found his place taken by Arthur Masuaku straight after Jack Harrison had fired Leeds 3-2 up during the 2nd half of the Hammers loss on Sunday.

The Sky Sports pundit offered this sad indictment:

“Not a good day for Vlasic when they’ve brought on what is a defender really to play on that left-hand side when they need a goal”.

A Worthwhile Investment?

Although Masuaku is fondly remembered for firing the Hammers into a 3-2 victory over Chelsea just a few short weeks ago, he is not known as a potent goal scorer.

The left-back from DR Congo has a paltry 2 goals for West Ham, and, his goal against Chelsea was his first for over 5 seasons! So, goals are the exception, rather than the rule..making it all the more incredible that he came on for Vlasic.

The Croatian player, on the other hand, is there to attack, and cost significant money. His purchase should have been ideal when the Hammers needed an goal urgently…however, it wasn’t in this instance.

So, when gaffer Moyes took him off, in a situation seemingly tailor made for him, especially when the Hammers needed a goal, sums up how effective the Croatian has been, and is considered to be at London Stadium.

Vlasic had seemingly started well for the club, registering his first strike against Watford just into the year. Often, when a player ‘breaks his duck’, they push on…Vlasic hasn’t. His replacement in this fixture suggests that his role remains fringe, rather than as a first team regular.

He has given little to justify his price tag so far, his star has shone dimly and infrequently. And, it is not as if he hasn’t been given sufficient opportunity, the AFCON loss of Said Benrahma granting him the opportunity to establish himself. Despite those opportunities, West Ham will need to see a massive change, if he is not to be considered an expensive loss for the club.
