Michael Owen predicts West Ham to close out their Europa League group campaign “in style” as they host Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday night (9 December).
The Croatian side travel to East London desperate to claim the point that would clinch their qualification into the knockout stages alongside West Ham.
However, ex-Liverpool striker Owen, writing in his BetVictor column on Thursday (9 December), suggests their hopes will all rest on Rapid Vienna to prevent Genk a victory in Belgium.
“West Ham have been outstanding in this group stage,” Owen said. “They’re unbeaten and have only conceded twice in their five games.”
“Whilst they are already through as group winners, I think they’ll want to win this in style. 2-0 to the Hammers.”
One game off perfection?
Owen backs the Irons to record their fifth win of the group stage against Dinamo Zagreb, doing the 2-0 double over the Croats in the process.
Michail Antonio and Declan Rice were the goalscorers in September when the Irons kicked off their European campaign in fine fashion.
The duo may be missing tonight, however, with top spot already wrapped up in the group and a trip to Burnley awaiting the Irons on Sunday (12 December).
Indeed, the only game David Moyes’ side failed to claim maximum points was last month’s trip to Belgium (4 November) when they played out a 2-2 draw with Genk.
A host of emerging stars may be hoping for a chance to play in front of the London Stadium on a European night but there could also be starting roles for the likes of Nikola Vlasic, Andriy Yarmolenko and Alex Kral, all of whom were unused substitutes in their 3-2 win over Chelsea on Saturday (4 December).
In other West Ham news, contact has been made with this 26-goal international star over a January loan switch to the Irons.
