We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie suggests Stuart Pearce could be the key to unlocking the full potential of Nathan Ake amid recent speculation linking him with a West Ham move.

Ake, 26, scored for Manchester City on Tuesday (14 December) as they ran riot against Leeds United at the Etihad Stadium, winning 7-0.

However, that substitute outing was just his sixth Premier League appearance of the season and that is why the Irons, among others, have been credited with an interest in signing the Dutch defender.

The Evening Standard reported last week (7 December) that the Irons were weighing up a January loan bid for the centre-back.

In response, ex-Hammer McAvennie told West Ham Zone: “He’s a good player.

“[Kurt] Zouma’s come in, he’s got a structure now and is doing very well.

“I think Stuart Pearce would get hold of him and show him the ways because he was a good defender himself.

“I think he could just fit into the West Ham way.”

Defensive crisis

Centre-backs Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma are facing lengthy spells on the sidelines with serious injuries while full-backs Aaron Cresswell, Ryan Fredericks and Ben Johnson have all missed games in recent weeks.

Vladimir Coufal, meanwhile, was sent off in Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat at Arsenal (15 December) and will miss Saturday’s clash with Norwich City (16 December).

January cannot come soon enough for David Moyes as he looks to add defensive reinforcements.

In other West Ham news, Neil Warnock launched into an on-air rant over a recent Irons player controversy.
