Carlton Palmer has told Give Me Sport Manchester City defender Nathan Ake could be perfect for West Ham as they look to strengthen at the back in January.

David Moyes will be without Angelo Ogbonna for the rest of 2021-22, while Kurt Zouma is out of action till March, and he wants new centre-backs when the winter transfer window opens, with Craig Dawson and Issa Diop his only options in the department right now.

West Ham are expected to undergo significant squad investment after Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky completed the purchase of a 27 per cent stake in the club in November, and Palmer reckons that makes a move for the Netherlands international, 26, feasible.

The former England international told GMS: “West Ham could be a perfect fit for him.

“Obviously, with the investment that’s come in with the guy that’s gone into West Ham, he has injected some money into the club. I think they could go for Ake.”

Great move?

Ake cost Man City £41million when he joined from Bournemouth in August 2020 [Sky Sports], but he has played very little this term, and he could be open to joining an ambitious side like the Hammers.

Pep Guardiola’s side are not likely to be keen on loaning him out in January, but they could do be willing to do business for a permanent deal and recoup some of the fee splashed on his signature.

West Ham are expected to bring in a defender, and paying for Ake could be worth it.

He is not only a left-sided centre-back, the Dutchman can also play at left-back having done so for Man City in a couple of games, and he is without a doubt a quality defender.

The Irons will need to spend to have a realistic chance of finishing in the top-four at the end of 2021-22, and signing someone like Ake could make all the difference.

Kretinsky is ready to back them in their bid to move to the next level, and landing the Man City man would be a huge statement of intent.
