West Ham United had their backs against the wall for the opening stages of the Premier League clash against Chelsea this afternoon.
With limited possession, the Hammers and Michail Antonio were starved of the ball and had few chances to counter-attack.
Glenn Hoddle was not impressed with the Jamaican international when he did get the chance, though, with his delivery not good enough.
Speaking live on BT Sports this afternoon, Hoddle questioned the ability of the forward to put a dangerous ball into the box.
“You see Antonio having to drift out wide yet again,” he said.
“It’s Soucek who’s getting into the box – it’s a poor ball, it just needed more whip on it.”
When Antonio did get the ball, he often made anything happen.
Yes, it can be frustrating as a lone striker when the majority of the play is in the other half of the pitch, but it is up to you to make things happen and change that.
The ball only really came to the striker in wide positions, and when that happens, he had to whip it in dangerously but instead he floated it straight to Edouard Mendy.
Question marks have started to surround Antonio and his lack of goals, and this really didn’t help his cause in the opening 45 minutes here.
Hoddle was right to question Antonio, but we are confident that he can turn this around and really start to pick up his form from earlier in the season.
