Former West Ham manager Alan Curbishley was not pleased after Pablo Fornals allowed Aston Villa draw level on Sunday.

The Hammers opened the scoring through Ben Johnson seven minutes into the game, but the hosts equalised through Ollie Watkins 27 minutes later.

Declan Rice ensured West Ham headed into the break with a 2-1 lead, and the visitors scored two more goals in the second-half after the Villans were reduced to 10 men.

Things could have been different had Ezri Konsa not been sent off for a professional foul on Jarrod Bowen five minutes after play restarted, and Curbishley was not pleased with Fornals at half-time.

Speaking on Premier League Productionscoverage of the game, he said: “Fornals was really poor there.

“He really didn’t deal with it.”

John McGinn played a reserve ball to Emi Buendia, who brushed past Fornals and pulled it back to Watkins, with the England international scoring from near the penalty spot.

While Lukasz Fabianski got a toe to it, he couldn’t keep it out.

Fortunately, the Spaniard’s momentary slip only cost West Ham a clean sheet, and he made up for it by grabbing his side’s third.

He struggled at times having played as the No.10 instead of his usual position on the left, but he was good on the ball and did create a couple of chances.

His lung-busting run to keep up with Jarrod Bowen allowed him to tap home the rebound and bag an easy goal.

David Moyes would not have been pleased with his defending in the build-up to Villa’s equaliser, and given the hunger of the West Ham boss for perfection, he will be telling Fornals his mind in training.

The Spaniard is one of the Hammers’ most hardworking players, and he needs to prevent things like that from happening again as the story could have been different against a tougher opponent.
