West Ham defenders Issa Diop and Craig Dawson were faulted for Genk’s goal in the Europa League clash on Thursday night.

The Hammers started the game on the worst possible note as Joseph Painstil found himself with a clear sight at Alphonse Areola’s goal.

While it could be argued that Areola could’ve done better with that shot, Painstil should never have been in that position and Diop’s possibly more responsible for it than Dawson as he let his man free.

Discussing this goal on the Europa League world feed, Wilson, a BBC Match of the Day commentator, said, “Genk have the lead. It’s the first time West Ham have conceded in the Europa League this season. Shambolic defending from the two centre-backs.”

Crazy start

The Hammers had an unbreached defence in the tournament thus far and for them to be undone by such amateur-esque defence was pretty out of character.

They’re usually tight at the back and their attackers are the ones that keep drifting away from their positions.

However, on this occasion, it seems like their defenders weren’t alert and paid the price for it.

It also shows why Diop and Dawson are the second choices as Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna have proven that they merit regular starts in the Premier League.

That said, the Hammers pairing that started this game grew into the contest and were much improved in the second half, but that still takes nothing away from their mistake.

West Ham are likely to top their group so this result will not particularly dent their hopes of advancing into the deeper stages of the tournament.
