Russell Penn has admitted Kidderminster Harriers are ‘shell-shocked’ after drawing West Ham in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
League North side caused a huge upset by beating Reading 2-1 on Saturday
Penn is aware of the magnitude of the tie but still hopes to write history as his side prepare to welcome West Ham to the Aggborough Stadium.
“I think my phone will go into meltdown. I was so proud, first and foremost for the players, club, chairman and fans. Everyone deserves it.” Penn told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“The chairman is buzzing. Did we expect to win? No, we thought we had a chance but we are shellshocked. We deserved the victory and the chairman was like the Grinch at Christmas – his smile went from ear to ear.
“I will be going up against one of the most respected British managers in David Moyes, which is fantastic for me. I know he respects the competition, the lower leagues and West Ham are on the up. What a tie.
“Hopefully we can write some more history.”
The magic of the cup.
This is a proper FA Cup tie that West Ham will be thrilled to take part in. Well, the fans at least.
The Hammers should be able
to avoid one of the competitions biggest upsets as David Moyes’ team faces
non-league opposition. However, these games are always interesting in terms of
seeing how the away team deals with the unusual pressures of the tie.
It’s quite rare that some of the highest-paid Premier League stars will be crammed into a hot and sweaty changing room and forced to play on questionable surfaces.
The Harriers have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain and the ground will be electric so the Irons will have to be cautious.
With that being said this should be a routine game for the Hammers. The gulf in quality is evident and a couple of early goals should kill the tie. This was the perfect draw for West Ham.
In other Hammers new, David Sullivan insists he is not forcing Moyes to sign Origi for West Ham.
