Darren Bent has vented his fury over the penalty Arsenal were awarded in their 2-0 win over West Ham on Wednesday night (15 December).

Arsenal claimed all three points at the Emirates Stadium thanks to second-half goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Emile Smith-Rowe, sandwiched either side of a missed penalty kick from Alexandre Lacazette.

Lacazette’s failure from 12 yards came as a result of Vladimir Coufal’s challenge on Martinelli, which also saw the Czech Republic full-back handed his second yellow card of the game as he subsequently saw red.

Ex England striker turned Sky Sports Soccer Saturday pundit Bent, an Arsenal fan, was furious with referee Anthony Taylor.

“That’s never been a penalty, and definitely not a booking, shocking decision,” Bent wrote via his personal Twitter profile.

Painfully expected

It’s hard not to feel aggrieved at the decision if you’re a West Ham fan.

It may not have had a big effect on the game – the Irons showed little going forward with 11 men all game – but Taylor still robbed them the opportunity of launching a late drive for an equaliser, with the Gunners eventually running out comfortable winners in North London.

The worst part is, did anyone really expect it to be overturned once Taylor made his call? It was painstakingly obvious that nothing would change, thanks in part to this ridiculous ‘clear and obvious’ part of the VAR decision making.

It seems that once contact is made, no matter the severity of it, the VAR will not overturn the referee’s on-field call.

But was Coufal endangering his opponent with his challenge last night? No. Did he win some of the ball? Yes.

David Moyes’ side didn’t deserve much last night, but they didn’t deserve to lose in that fashion.

In other West Ham news, Jim White claims the Irons want to sign this 22-year-old South American star.
