West Ham-linked Eddie Nketiah looks set to leave Arsenal in 2022 as contract talks continue to stutter, according to Sky Sports.

Nketiah, 22, joined the Arsenal academy in 2015 after a seven-year spell with London rivals Chelsea.

The “phenomenal” [Mikel Arteta, via The Athletic] centre-forward has made 67 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 15 goals, but his contract expires in 2022, with a breakthrough in negotiations looking increasingly unlikely.

Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth issued an update on Nketiah via his personal Twitter profile on Monday evening.

He wrote: “Talks over new contract for Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah so far failed to find a resolution. Increasingly likely Nketiah will not stay beyond summer. Nketiah can sign pre-contract with foreign club in January. He wants regular football. Arteta wants him to stay.”

Irons in the mix

A prolific scorer at youth level, there is sure to be huge interest in Nketiah across Europe over the coming months.

The Lewisham-born forward is England’s record goalscorer at Under-21 level with 16 goals in 17 appearances, breaking the record last year when he surpassed Alan Shearer’s tally of 13.

His goalscoring record at club level isn’t bad either – 21 goals in 87 outings as a young player is nothing to be sniffed at, particularly when many of those have been from the bench.

But it’s fair to say he is yet to convince at the highest level – five goals in 38 Premier League appearances says it all.

There’s clearly talent there, though, it’s now just which club can bring the best out of him.

West Ham are an attractive proposition to many players right now, but would a move to the London Stadium be in Nketiah’s best interests?

He needs guaranteed games, and he certainly would not be afforded that in East London with Michail Antonio around.

On West Ham’s part, though, he could represent a bargain, and a handy option from the bench.

In other West Ham news, this Manchester United-linked player has rejected a contract and announced his Irons exit on Instagram.
