Dermot Gallagher has reacted on Premier League productions after West Ham were denied a penalty in their goalless draw against Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday.

Dwight McNeil brought down Hammers centre-back Craig Dawson in his box today (12 December) while trying to clear the ball, but the referee and VAR insisted it was nothing after a check, and the visitors would have felt hard done by.

The Sky Sports expert and former FIFA referee has explained why a spot-kick was not awarded, claiming the Burnley ace would consider himself lucky at the end of the day.

Gallagher said: “I think he’s lucky. I can fully understand why Graham Scott doesn’t see it because there are so many people in his view.

“All I can think is the VAR felt that McNeil was trying to pull out, and by trying to pull out, it didn’t meet the criteria and tolerance level, but I think he’s lucky.

“He probably breathed a sigh of relief when it was cleared.”

David Moyes was not happy with the decision at the end of the game, and that is understandable after the quartet of Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea had some soft penalties awarded to them on Saturday (11 December).

VAR needs to be consistent when it comes to giving these calls, and there is no denying that McNeill brought down the West Ham man.

It should have been a penalty, and Burnley would not have had any complaints had it been awarded.

The Hammers have themselves to blame at the end of the day as they were blunt in attack despite dominating proceedings.

They need to win these types of games if they are serious about their top-four ambitions, and bringing in some quality attacking reinforcements in January would be very helpful.

Relying on Michail Antonio alone will not be enough to get them into Europe’s elite competition, and they need to splash the cash next month and strengthen their striking department.

In other West Ham news, an amazing attacker is making personal arrangements for Hammers switch in January.
