Arthur Masuaku was caught out of position as Manchester City opened the scoring in Sunday’s 2-1 win over West Ham, and David Moyes was not pleased.
The Hammers boss included the left-back to provide additional cover in defence, but he failed to do his job as Riyad Mahrez found enough space to get in a pass to Ilkay Gundogan, and according to Sky Sports’ Nick Wright, Moyes was not particularly happy.
The hosts doubled their lead in the closing stages of the game, but Manuel Lanzini pulled one back for the visitors just some seconds later.
Wright wrote on the website’s live coverage of the clash: “David Moyes wasn’t too pleased with Masuaku there. The Frenchman is in the team today to provide extra cover on the left, but he let Mahrez go, and West Ham were punished.”
Moyes decided to start two left-backs just to keep Man City wingers in check, but it did not yield the desired result.
Masuaku was making only his second Premier League appearance – and first start – of the season, and he did very little to impress.
Wandering out of his position, he allowed Mahrez free space, and the goal proved crucial to the result in the end.
The West Ham man also misplaced some passes while going forward, and he was withdrawn for Jarrod Bowen with 16 minutes remaining on the clock.
Moyes headed into the clash with a game plan that could have at least earned him a point, but one moment ruined it all, and his reaction says it all.
West Ham were not the better side, but they managed the game well and will now look to learn from their mistakes when they face Brighton and Chelsea over the course of the next seven days.
They have lost their last two league games and will be looking to avoid another one anytime soon.
Moyes will need his men to stick with his tactical instructions at all times for that not to happen.
