Steven Gerrard has succeeded Dean Smith at Aston Villa, and Davie Provan believes he will be looking to West Ham for inspiration.

The Hammers have blown everyone away with their brilliant start to the 2021-22 season, currently sitting third in the Premier League table after 11 games.

David Moyes will be hoping to guide his side to next season’s Champions League after watching them narrowly miss out last term, and Provan reckons Gerrard will look to emulate the London Stadium outfit after moving to Villa Park from Rangers.

The Sky Sports pundit told Scottish Sun: “Gerrard will be expected to challenge for the Champions League places and given the backing to achieve that.

“If Leicester can come within a whisker of finishing in the top four, there’s nothing to stop Villa going one better.

Gerrard will see West Ham gatecrashing the Champions League places and fancy his chances.”

Absolutely

The Irons are becoming a point of reference for most clubs in the English top-flight, and their rise in the last 18 months would have contributed to Smith’s sacking.

Despite splashing the cash in the summer, Villa are struggling and could be battling relegation, while West Ham are punching above their weight with less investment.

Moyes’ model will be attractive to a lot of managers, and Gerrard will be surely looking at how he has managed to get things done in east London against all odds.

After 1000 games under his belt as manager, the Hammers boss has seen it all in the business.

He has been sacked and has had several lows in his career, and Gerrard can learn a lot from him as he looks to impress in the Premier League after just three seasons in the game.

The rookie manager has a lot of work on his hands, without a doubt, but he has huge potential and should not hesitate to learn from Moyes and co.
